## Types of interactive questions

You can add interactive questions with different answer options.

**For assessment:**

## How to customize interactive questions

You can customize the appearance of interactive questions from the **Design** tab in the settings. There you’ll find two sections:

1.  **Layout:** Choose whether you want answers displayed horizontally, vertically, or on the sides.
2.  **Style:** Choose from predefined color palettes or customize the design using the **Customize** option. You’ll find six sections there:
    1.  **General:** Lets you change the color and/or disable the borders and background of the interactive question.
    2.  **Questions:** Lets you change the font, text size, line spacing, and text color of the question. For Fill in the blanks questions, you can edit the text directly on the canvas, so this option won’t appear.
    3.  **Answers:** Lets you change the font, text size, line spacing, and text color of the answers. For Open answer questions, you can edit the placeholder text shown to your audience before they start typing.
    4.  **Button:** Lets you change the text on the submit button. You can choose from several options or add custom text with a maximum of 20 characters.
    5.  **Feedback**: Lets you change the font, text size, line spacing, and text color of the success and error messages shown after your audience submits an answer.
    6.  **Timer**: Lets you change the color of the message shown when the available time to answer the question runs out.

Keep in mind that you can only use the fonts available in the interactive question settings. At the moment, custom fonts aren’t supported. To ensure usability, text formatting can’t exceed certain limits defined in the settings.

  

## How to add actions to interactive questions

You can also add actions to interactive questions once an answer has been submitted. There are several configuration options:

*   **After answering:** The action is triggered after the question is answered. This applies to both assessment questions and data collection questions.
*   **Based on the result:** The action is triggered depending on whether the answer is correct or incorrect. This applies only to assessment questions.

  

To do this:

1.  Drag an interactive question onto the canvas or click on it.
2.  A side menu will open with three submenus: Content, Actions, and Design.
3.  Click **Actions**.
4.  Choose **After answering** or **Based on the result**, depending on when you want the interactivity to trigger.
5.  If you select **After answering**, click the interactivity icon (a hand) in the On answer option and choose the action you want to happen.
6.  If you select **Based on the result**, you can add interactivities for correct and incorrect answers. Just click the interactivity icon in both options and select the interactivity.
7.  A dropdown menu will open showing the interactivities you’ve added.
8.  If you want to add more than one, click the **Add interactivity** button in that dropdown menu.
9.  That’s it! You’ve added actions to your interactive questions.

  

You can also set a different sound to play when a question is answered correctly or incorrectly:

1.  Click on Actions
2.  Click on Play audio, located just below Behavior
3.  After clicking, you’ll see different options to upload your audio
    1.  Choose sound
        1.  Correct answer
        2.  Incorrect answer
        3.  Neutral
    2.  AI voiceover
    3.  Record
    4.  From a link (URL)
    5.  Drag and drop your audio files from your device
4.  Choose the option that works best for you—and you’re all set!

  

Heads up! If you choose a template with interactive questions, the audio will be set by default. To customize it:

1.  Click on the pencil icon
2.  A panel will open where you can rename the audio, trim it, or even loop it.
3.  To replace it, just click on the icon next to the audio name.
4.  After clicking, you’ll see different options to upload your audio
    1.  Choose sound
        1.  Correct answer
        2.  Incorrect answer
        3.  Neutral
    2.  AI voiceover
    3.  Record
    4.  From a link (URL)
    5.  Drag and drop your audio files from your device
5.  Choose the option that works best for you—and you’re all set!

  

You can also add a time limit **between the answer and the “Go to page” action**:

1.  Click the arrow next to **After answering** or **Based on the result.**
2.  A menu will open where you can set the time limit in seconds.
3.  Set it and you’re done.

**Heads up:** If you add more than one interactivity, they must be compatible with each other. The tool won’t allow you to add actions that aren’t compatible with interactivities you’ve already added.

  

These are the actions you can add to your interactive questions:

*   Open window
*   Play audio
*   Go to page
*   Scroll to element
*   Effect
*   Show element
*   Hide element

  

The tool also lets you show a success or error message after answering. To do this:

1.  Drag an interactive question onto the canvas or click on it.
2.  A side menu will open with three submenus: Content, Actions, and Design.
3.  Click **Actions**.
4.  At the bottom, turn on the **Message after answering option**.
5.  A section will appear just below where you can add the messages.
6.  Add your success message in the first field.
7.  Add your error message in the second field.
8.  Voilà!

  

You can also add a timer to set a time limit for answering:

1.  Drag an interactive question onto the canvas or click on it.
2.  A side menu will open with three submenus: Content, Actions, and Design.
3.  Click **Actions**.
4.  Turn on **Timer** and set the time limit.
5.  You’re all set!

  

## How to configure interactive questions

In the interactive question settings, you can choose different options so that questions repeat and your audience can see the answers.

To do this:

1.  Open the **Interactive questions** menu located in the left sidebar.
2.  Click **Question settings** at the bottom of the menu.
3.  A side menu will open with the following options you can combine:
    1.  **Configure questions**
        1.  **Will question results be shown?**
            1.  **Not shown:** Your audience won’t know whether their answer is correct or incorrect at that moment.
            2.  **Only their results:** Participants will see only their own answers individually.
    2.  **Everyone’s results and ranking:** Participants will see, either simultaneously or asynchronously, the answers from all participants along with their own results in a ranking.
    3.  **Will the questions repeat?**
        1.  **No repeat:** Questions won’t repeat under any circumstances.
        2.  **Until correct**: The question repeats until it’s answered correctly.
        3.  **At the end:** All questions repeat once the creation is finished.

**Heads up:** The option you choose will automatically apply to all questions in your Genially.

  

## How to add a results summary

If you want your audience to get a brief summary of their answers or view participants’ rankings, here are the steps:

1.  Open the **Interactive questions** menu in the left sidebar
2.  Click **Question settings** at the bottom of the menu
3.  A side panel will open.
4.  Configure the questions with **Only their results**.
5.  A **Preview** button will be automatically enabled. Click on it.
6.  You can now configure and see what the final results screen will look like. If you want to change the appearance, click **Customize**.
7.  A screen will open where you can configure the following options for the results summary screen users will see at the end:
    1.  **Style and layout.**You can choose from the following options:
        1.  Standard
        2.  Analytical
        3.  Assessment
        4.  Gamification

*   Background color  
    2\. Text color  
    **Content based on results:** to tailor the final results screen to the outcomes obtained.

1.  **Passing score:** where you set the percentage of correct answers required to pass.
    1.  **Goal achieved: messages and effects:** the text content and effects you can add when the goal is achieved.
    2.  **Goal not achieved: messages and effects:** the text content and effects you can add when the goal is not achieved.
2.  **Enable continue button.** If enabled, a component will open where you can configure:
    1.  Button text: to customize it however you like.
    2.  Action: to choose the page you want to send the user to after clicking the button.

  

8\. **On the right side of the screen, you’ll see the preview** based on the configuration you set.

  

## How interactive questions are displayed

For your audience viewing a Genially with interactive questions, here’s what you need to know:

*   When entering the Genially, a pop-up window appears where users must enter an alias (max. 20 characters) to identify themselves and access the content.
*   If the alias is already in use, they’ll see a red error message and won’t be able to continue until they enter a valid alias that hasn’t been used before.
*   If your audience accesses the Genially again from the same browser and has accepted and kept Genially cookies, they’ll be able to continue using the same alias and resume viewing from the last page visited. Otherwise, they’ll need to use a new alias.
*   If your audience doesn’t see the pop-up window to enter an alias, it means the **Individual activity** option is turned off and responses won’t be collected.

  

## How to customize the access screen

If you’ve enabled Individual tracking, you’ll see an option to identify who’s accessing your creation. This allows every person visiting your creation to enter their name, email address, or a number before accessing the content.

This way, you’ll get personalized information about each user’s individual activity if you’ve included interactive questions.

You can customize this access window however you want. Here’s how:

*   In your creation editor, click the Activity icon located at the top.
*   Enable the **Individual** option.
*   You’ll see the **Identify who accesses** option appear. Select it.
*   A **Customize** button will appear on the right side so you can personalize the access screen.
*   Click the button and a menu will open on the right-hand side.
*   Click the **Customize** button again.
*   A modal window will open where you can customize layouts, behavior, styles, and even enable automatic alias generation.

**Heads up**! If you decide not to request identification, users will still be able to access the content without identifying themselves. Their answers will appear in your Individual Activity panel under automatically generated names (“U\_” followed by 5 random digits). If you’d like more information, check out this tutorial.

  

## How the submit button works in interactive questions

You can also configure the submit button so the interactive question is sent automatically or only after clicking **Submit**.

1.  Drag the interactive question onto the canvas or double-click it if it’s already there.
2.  A menu will open on the left.
3.  Click **Content**.
4.  At the bottom, you’ll see the option to **Enable submit button**.
5.  Turn it on, and you’re all set!

  

**Heads up!** This option isn’t available for all interactive questions and follows a specific logic:

*   **Since there’s only one correct answer**, the tool will always allow you to enable or disable the submit button for:
    *   Single choice interactive question
    *   True or false interactive question
*   You’ll also be able to enable or disable the submit button for the following questions, **as long as only one option is set as correct**:
    *   Image choice
    *   Survey
    *   Image survey
*   The submit button **will always appear by default and can’t be removed**for the following questions:
    *   Multiple choice
    *   Sort
    *   Fill in the blanks
    *   Short answer
    *   Open answer

  

## How to collect, review, and download results

To collect, review, and/or download results from your creations, you’ll need a premium plan that includes this feature. You can check all our plans and the features included in each one on our [plans page](https://genially.com/plans/).

If you disable this option at any point, you’ll stop receiving information about your audience’s responses until you enable it again.

**Heads up:** In **JPG**, **MP4**, and **PDF** **downloads**, interactive questions appear as static images and can’t be interacted with.

If you want to select answers, the **View offline** download is your best option. Keep in mind that this type of download doesn’t collect data and doesn’t require entering an alias.
